The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process by which interested adults become members of the Catholic Church. The R.C.I.A. is primarily a journey of faith that begins with the stirrings of faith and the asking of questions.
The process – RCIA is a process not a program – involves prayer, discernment, catechesis, involvement in the works of charity and justice, five main stages or periods (Inquiry, Catechumenate, Purification/Illumination, Paschal Triduum, and Mystagogy), a series of rites (Rite of Acceptance, Rite of Sending, Rite of Election/Enrollment of Names) and scrutinies that lead to the celebration of baptism, confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil.
